Today Financing Hope and family were invited to the puppy pals open day at Glossodia, a dog lovers paradise. There were dog training shows, photos with puppies and great merchandise to buy. Most important was the information about the services that are provided by this wonderful organisation, Guide Dogs Australia. In summary –
* It takes on average $30,000 to raise and train a puppy to be ready to be provided as a guide dog to a client
* Guide Dogs currently receive no government funding
* There are more than 240 guide dogs currently working in the community with clients and more than 3,000 required
One of my favourite parts of the day was hearing from a current guide dog user. “Helen” who told us how Guide Dogs have changed her life, Helen had her second guide dog with her, as her first dog had retired. She has had guide dogs in her life for over 12 years and in that time she has had 3 children, completed a new qualification, returned to the workforce and opened up her own business.
Helen expressed the confidence and freedom that her Guide Dog had given her. To say that these two dogs have changed her life is an understatement. Her courage and conviction to face the daily challenges of life was impressive. Her eight year old son is also vision impaired and is being taught how to use a kaine at this age. Guide Dogs are not usually introduced until later teens.
Giving to the Guide Dogs can be a one off donation or on an ongoing monthly basis.
Struggling to find that next gift for that special person in your life – why not buy something unique from the Guide Dogs website – www.guidedogs.com.au/shop
Thank you for sharing your talents and time with us today, a piece of my heart was stolen by Helen today, a reminder of why this is such a wonderful cause for Financing Hope to support.
